OKRestful sleep is important for the regeneration of body and mind. Decisive for this is not only one's own sleep hygiene, but also a suitable mattress. Sooner or later, even with the best mattress, it's time for a change.
Changing your mattress is necessary for one single but important reason: your health. Material fatigue can cause cavities to form in the mattress, which not only affect comfort, but can also lead to back problems. Depending on the quality and material, this can happen after only five years of use. In general, it can be said that synthetic mattresses are less durable in this respect than natural latex mattresses, whose point elasticity and good recovery properties prevent the formation of recumbent cavities.
In addition, there are hygienic reasons that make it necessary to change mattresses. Mites, bacteria and fungi create an unhygienic sleeping environment, which is not only a problem for allergy sufferers. Mattresses without washable covers are particularly affected by this and should be replaced after just five years. Natural latex mattresses are also far ahead of their competitors when it comes to hygiene. The natural latex core is resistant to mites and bacteria and is particularly breathable. By regularly washing the mattress cover, the mattress remains hygienic and can be used for up to 15 years, twice as long as average mattresses.
If you buy cheap, you buy twice, as the saying goes, and this also applies to mattresses. The best tip for a long life of your mattress is therefore to pay attention to high quality and good materials already at the time of purchase. In the best case, your mattress will last twice as long as a cheap, low-quality one. A good indicator here is also the volume weight - i.e. how heavy the mattress is per cubic meter. The lower the volume weight, the shorter the durability. The volume weight should be at least 30kg for a mattress that is used permanently. Natural latex mattresses, like ours, have a very high density and are generally among the most durable models.
With proper care, the lifespan of your mattress can be extended, which not only benefits your wallet, but also the environment. To avoid cave-ins, rotate your mattress (if there are no defined reclining zones) 180° at regular intervals, reversing the head and foot ends. If possible, it is also advisable to turn the mattress regularly (i.e. swap the top and bottom sides) to ensure even wear.
In terms of hygiene, airing out the mattress core and washing the cover are crucial. To allow the liquid absorbed during the night to escape from the mattress, you should remove the covers and pillows during the day. In addition, you can open the mattress cover monthly and turn it over for a few hours to optimally ventilate the core. If necessary, and at least every three months, you should wash the cover according to the washing instructions.
If your mattress has already reached the age of five years, you should check it regularly. For mattresses without a removable cover, it is advisable to replace it now for hygienic reasons. If it has developed cavities, which is often the case with cheaper, synthetic mattresses after just a few years, it should also be replaced. Regardless of the material and quality, a mattress becomes obsolete after 15 years at the latest and should be changed.
